WHO AM I?

Loooking to contact me? You can get a hold of me here.

Hello! I’m Jonathan Kjærulff Skovlund.

I’m a Sound Design student from Denmark. For the past many years my life has been revolving around sound and music.

I’m currently attending Sonic College in Kolding, Denmark – one of the world’s leading Sound Design educations, and one of the only education establishments in Europe to offer tuition with a curriculum as extensive and broad in Sound Design. Here I’m expanding my knowledge and working on my practical skills with hands-on tasks in many different areas, such as Game Audio, Music Production and other fields including Soundscapes, Audio Branding and Podcast Production.

I chose and attended Game Audio and 3D Immersive Sound in Games (in spatial format Dolby Atmos) as my elective subjects.

In addition to my interest in Game Audio and Sound Design, I spend most of my time (alongside school and jobs) creating and being ambitious with my own music – primarily with my Pop/Rock band Lara Luna and progressive rock band Isbjörg. I play several instruments, including guitars, piano and drums. I have also received singing lessons for 10 years – singing and playing everything from jazz to classical choir to rock music. I enjoy and strive to be versatile and open for new impressions, knowledge and obtaining new skills. Whether it’s in Sound Design or in music.

I hope you will check out my Game Audio projects and music, now you’re here 🙂 Both can be found in the header menu.

Want to know more?

I come from a family of 5 children, with me being the youngest. Music was introduced to us at a very young age with my father’s big interest in music. He plays guitar himself, and with all the kids mostly playing different instruments, we quickly had our family band formed playing all sorts of music – from Bruce Springsteen to Santana and old Danish classics.

I come from Odense on the island of Fyn (yes, the small island in the middle of Denmark), where I’ve spent most of my life, where I went to school, went out and worked jobs. I lived on a small farm with my family, where we had our horses, cats and our dog, and when my older siblings had moved out, I had the opportunity to make my own music and sound studio, and my band Lara Luna now had a rehearsal space.

During my youngest years, long before high school, I quickly gained a huge interest in both video games and sport. I played football for 10 years and still follow the sport and the team I support. I can delve into mostly anything sport related and love to widen my horizons. Aside from football I also grew up watching the Tour De France and the Olympics, no matter the discipline. I guess what I’m trying to say is I love most sports, and love sharing that interest with others.

As mentioned, my love for video games also came at an early age. My earliest memories must be playing the FIFA-games with my father, my brother and friends. The passion for video games arose especially when I was introduced to the fantasy genre. We were a group of young friends that were hugely interested and invested in the The Lord of The Rings-movies and universe, and I remember we would go to each other’s places and play the video games for hours and days on end, when they were released in the early ‘00s. We discovered games like Warcraft 3, The Elder Scrolls-series and World of Warcraft – and for an individual who never really got into reading books, but loved storytelling and immersing myself in fictional stories, video games were the thing for me. Aside from the fantasy and RPG-genres I enjoy most types of games. From FPS games to casual titles and everything in between – I love getting introduced to new stuff. In online games I value the opportunity to share moments with friends, and in single player games it is clearly the storytelling and narrative qualities I endear the most.

In high school (Odense Katedralskole) I majored in Music, English and Italian. Choosing the subject of music was a natural choice for me, as I had been taking lessons in singing and piano for a few years prior at the local school of music (Odense Musikskole), and I had been playing the drums for a few years. I was also very interested in the country of Italy, and not many schools in Denmark offer lessons in Italian, so I knew I had to do it. I sadly haven’t had the chance to become completely fluent by moving there for a longer period, but I still enjoy the language and the country a lot – it is one of my favourite places to go.

During high school I formed my band Lara Luna with a couple of friends and my brother who plays the bass. It is an ambitious project, where I am the frontman, being the lead singer and one of the guitarists. I knew I wanted to sing in a band, but we found it a bit odd for the lead singer to also play the drums – luckily a few years prior to founding the band I had won my first electric guitar in a contest, and I took it upon myself to learn the guitar, which is now my primary instrument beside from singing. I’m the primary songwriter in Lara Luna, and we’ve been so lucky that our music has given us the opportunities to play both big and small venues in Denmark, and we’ve played festivals as well. Including SPOT Festival, which is one of the leading festivals for upcoming music in Scandinavia. In July 2023 we released our debut EP ‘The Weight of My World’. Feel free to check us out!

In 2022 I joined the progressive rock band Isbjörg as their new lead singer. I had been working with their drummer prior to joining, so I was already a fan of the band, the music and the members in it. The creative process differs quite a bit from my other band. Lara Luna consists of 4 members, whereas Isbjörg consists of 6. And in this new band, it is a more joint experience to write new music. I love it to bits, and I think we are able to create some very special music. On November 1st 2024 we have released our full-length album ‘Falter, Endure’ – the biggest musical project I have been part of, and I can’t describe how proud I am of the record.

I love being on stage to perform. It’s something that I discovered shortly before high school where I took part in a musical for the first time. To sing, dance or in any way perform on stage with a large group of people is a special feeling. I have been in a total of 6 musicals, either as an actor, singer or dancer, and in 2022 I had the pleasure to co-direct and be the musical director of a musical. A fantastic experience. Musicals is something I’d love to do more of, but it requires a lot of time.

After high school I spent most of my time creating and playing music with Lara Luna. But since it’s not always a very lucrative profession sitting and writing music, I worked at a Kindergarten with children aged from 1 to 6. Most of my hours were with the youngest kids. It was all a really enjoyable experience, which taught me a lot, and there were many moments during my almost 3 years there that I cherish a lot to this day.

After those years I felt like I needed to try something new. My mother also thought it was about time I got myself an education. With Lara Luna and other musical endeavors I had often been the person in charge of recording and producing our music – and I loved doing so. A friend of mine had told me about the school of Sound Design, Sonic College a few years prior. It felt right to try and pursue to make what originally were my hobbies into my way of living. But usually it’s only about 25% of the applicants that actually make it. So I decided to quit my job, and prepare myself to make the best application possible. The application process is a three-part process, including sending in sound or music products that you have made, a written exam and an interview. I got accepted on my first try, and have been attending the education since September of 2021. I’m extremely proud and happy to be here. I already had an interest in learning more about Game Audio and Sound Design for games, but Sonic College helped me take the first steps on the journey.

And now we’re somewhat up to date, and you know everything about me (or close to). Want to help me write the next chapter? Feel free to contact me – all the information needed is on this site. I look forward to hearing from you.
